Stories of Building Community Power

  • A Week of Abundant Good
Last week was a week of extraordinary, abundant good! On Monday, Earth Day, Groundswell, Inc. celebrated being selected for a $156 million US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF) Solar For All Award for our SE Rural Power Team. Together, we will deploy community solar and energy storage across eight states — Alabama, Arkansas, North Central Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Central and Southern Virginia — that will cut electricity bills and energy burdens in half for tens of thousands of people with low and moderate household incomes across the region.
  • Celebrating Earth Month: Equity, Sustainability, & Accessibility
As we celebrate Earth Month, we are thrilled to announce that we have been selected for a $156+ million award under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund! The Southeast Rural Power Coalition—led by Groundswell—will launch and implement the Southeast Rural Power: Solar for All Program, delivering residential-serving community solar, associated energy storage, direct solar savings, energy efficiency housing improvements, and greenhouse gas emissions reduction to low-income and disadvantaged communities throughout the region.
  • Maryland Tough, Baltimore Strong
It's undeniable that the "Maryland Tough, Baltimore Strong" motto has resonated through social media, news outlets, and conversations lately, especially after the devastating collapse of the Key Bridge on the early morning of March 26th. This resilient spirit reflects the challenges and hardships Marylanders, particularly those in Baltimore, have weathered throughout history.
  • Taking the (EV) School Bus
I took the bus to and from school until I was old enough to drive. When the bell rang, and we’d pour out of school, dozens of yellow school buses would be lined up waiting for us with their engines idling. Particularly on hot and humid days, the diesel fumes would be suffocating, and I’d often end up with a headache by the time we pulled out of the school’s drive. If you rode the bus, you may have similar memories, too.
  • Join us for Rural Resilience: EV Fleets & Rural Communities!
After kicking our Rural Resilience webinar series off in February with a conversation on how the “Direct Pay” provision of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) is enabling community ownership of solar and resiliency projects, I couldn’t be more excited to dive into another avenue of how the IRA, and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), tax credits are creating access to building community health and resiliency in our webinar on Wednesday, April 3!
  • SOUL: An Investment in Housing Equity & Rural Resilience
Spring is here, and as temperatures rise, utility bills will increase to keep households cool in the warmer months. In rural areas, many older homes have massive energy burdens due to out-of-date appliances, air leakage, poor infrastructure, and other energy inefficiencies. Groundswell is revitalizing rural communities through energy-efficient upgrades with the Save on Utilities Long Term (SOUL™) program. An investment in energy efficiency is an investment in housing equity. Creating comfortable homes, and reducing the financial burden on households leads to thriving and sustainable communities.
  • Making a Difference one Household at a time with SOUL
In Georgia, many low- to moderate-income households face disproportionate energy burdens. Energy burdens are measured by the percentage of total household income spent on household electricity bills.
